Signature Halloween Dishes From Around The World

It seems that no matter where you look there is a pumpkin inspired dish somewhere. Whether it be a pumpkin cake, pumpkin bread or pumpkin cookies, pumpkin foods are all around us. Not every country consumes pumpkin dishes to celebrate Halloween though. Here are some signature Halloween dishes from around the world.

Barmbrack And Soul Cakes, Ireland

Ireland is considered to be the birthplace of Halloween. In this country they make a fruitcake called barmbrack. It contains a treat inside of it that can foretell the person who’s eating the cakes future supposedly. In this country they celebrate a holiday very similar to Halloween called All Saints Day. Traditionally they give those that go door to door round cakes called soul cakes. They are made out of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and raisins.

Fave Dei Morti, Italy

Similar to All Saints Day, Italians celebrate All Souls’ Day. Instead of cake, they make cookies with almonds and they cover the cookies with sugar that makes this dessert very sweet.

Pan De Muerto, Mexico

To celebrate Day Of The Dead, called Dia De Los Muertos, Mexicans mold bread into animals and angels. They also make a sweet bread called Pan de Muerto. It is sometimes sweetened with orange zest and is often decorated with either bones or teardrops. Many individuals will leave these cookies at the graveside of a loved one.

Guagua De Pan, Ecuador

Bread babies, called Guagua De Pan, are what is served for Day Of The Dead in Ecuador. They are made with wheat and often times with jelly. They are given out as gifts to friends and family members.

Bonfire Toffee, United Kingdom

This candy is typically eaten on both Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night. It is made out of sugar, butter and black treacle on large sheets. Once it has set it is often broken apart with a hammer.

Huesos De Santo, Spain

Eaten on All Saints’ Day, “bones” are made out of almond paste and topped with syrup. Some variations also have a filling inside of them.

Candy Apples And Caramel Corn, The United States

While we do consume a lot of pumpkin flavored things in the U.S. for Halloween, other favorites include candy apples and caramel corn. By far though the most popular thing to eat on Halloween is candy received from trick or treating!
