Top Haunted Cities in America

From spooky underground tunnels to former battlefields said to be haunted by the souls of dead soldiers, here are the top haunted cities in America.

New Orleans, Louisiana
One of the most haunted cities in the U.S. has to be New Orleans. NOLA sits below sea level, so the city’s cemeteries are filled with above-ground tombs, which adds to the spooky vibe of New Orleans. One of the most visited tombs is the tomb of Marie Laveau, the so-called Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, whose ghost is said to wander around St. Louis Cemetery.  The French Quarter is also said to be haunted by spirits from the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, as well as the ghost of pirate Jean Lafitte.

Portland, Oregon
You can’t list the top haunted cities in America without naming Portland. Hidden beneath Portland’s Old Town area are secret passageways known as Shanghai Tunnels.  The tunnels date back to the 1800s when it wasn’t uncommon for people to get shanghaied– or smuggled through hidden trapdoors inside saloons and taken through the tunnels before they were to be shipped off as slaves.  You can take a tour of the tunnels, which are said to be haunted by some of the victims of the Shanghai Tunnels.  The Beyond Bizarre Ghost Tour uses paranormal tracking equipment to try to locate one of the popular spirits called Nina said to haunt the tunnels.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
The Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War was the scene of unspeakable carnage, where some 50,000 soldiers were killed or injured and it is said that many of the tortured souls still haunt the famous battlefield.  After Dark Investigations in Gettysburg offers guided ghost tours and allows guests to use paranormal tracking equipment and you can go on a candlelit walking tour at the Historic Farnsworth House.

Washington, D.C.
Legend has it that a demon black cat that appeared just before President Lincoln was assassinated still haunts the streets of Washington, D.C.  It has also been said that many famous spirits haunt the White House, including John and Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison, and Abraham Lincoln. Washington D.C. is so haunted, that there are numerous ghost tours available in the nation’s capital, exploring haunted hotspots such as Lafayette Square, the Hay-Adams hotel, Ford’s Theatre, and St. John’s Church.

Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is frequently voted as America’s Most Haunted City.  Some believe it is haunted because the city was built atop Native American burial grounds, while others believe it is because the victims of a bloody Revolutionary War battle in Savannah still haunt the historic southern city.   Colonial Park Cemetery is often called Savannah’s oldest and most haunted cemetery, and you can take a guided tour through it and learn about those buried there.
