Chocolate is big business. In the U.S. alone, Americas spend about 11 billion dollars on chocolate each year. For the most part, chocolate comes in three types: dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate. Things like nuts, caramel and peanut butter are often added to chocolate to give it some added flavor. However, these aren’t the only types of chocolate that consumers are after. Throughout the world there are some weird chocolates that even the bravest eater wouldn’t consume.
Shiitake Mushroom Chocolate
Shiitake mushrooms can be found in appetizers, main courses and chocolate. Yes, you read that right, chocolate! In Asian countries shiitake mushrooms are popular and are considered a real treat when covered in chocolate. They are commonly found in truffles as the mushrooms give this chocolate candy a rich flavor.
Cucumber Vodka Mint Truffle
The masterminds behind this chocolate are husband and wife Whajung Park and Christian Alexandre. Vodka, cucumber puree and mint are mixed together and covered with dark chocolate. Those who consume this chocolate often say that the best part is the tingle that your tongue feels after eating it. If you are wanting to try this one, you will have to wait a bit as this candy is only available for six months each year starting in April.
Gouda Kit Kat
Kit Kats are quite popular in Japan. This is partly due to the fact that there are over 200 different Kit Kat varieties available. One of the more popular ones is the Gouda inspired Kit Kat. The cheese offers an interesting flavor when combined with the chocolate that’s both sour and smoky.
Bacon Bar
Bacon seems to be good with just about anything, including chocolate. The Vosges Company has had a lot of success selling the Mo’s Bacon Bar. Basically it’s just a chocolate bar combined with apple smoked bacon. The result is a salty and savory treat all rolled into one.
Kitten Tongue Chocolate
This chocolate is pretty normal in flavor as compared to the other ones listed above. However, the appearance is a little disturbing. Each piece is shaped like the tongue of a kitten. If you can get past the appearance, the chocolate supposedly is pretty good. This unique treat is available in Czech Republic.
As interesting as all of these chocolates sound, I think I might stick to just plain old milk chocolate. If you plan on getting your significant other some chocolate for Valentine’s Day, may we suggest buying one that she actually likes. Now, if you do plan on getting her some chocolate that’s well, nontraditional so to speak, make sure you also get her something else just in case it doesn’t go over well.
