The Kentucky Derby 2011 is quickly approaching! I remember reading this opening statement somewhere, “The Kentucky Derby is America’s original, extravagant springtime sports party” and I believe it! One of the aspects other than the obvious horse race is the celebrity scene, which has always appealed to the Derby. If you attend the Derby, you are sure to see starlets and socialites sporting their Derby attire beginning with their extraordinary hats. Did you know that wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is believed to be good luck? That’s right and as a matter of fact, men have taken part in the tradition too. Interesting fact, the crazy hats didn’t come along until Millionaire’s Row opened in the 1950’s.
Enjoy a refreshing Mint Julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint, and sugar syrup… It’s the traditional beverage of the race and is served in silver or pewter mugs. In fact, each year almost 120,000 of these juleps are served over the two-day period! And wait until the horses step onto the track and the band strikes up “My Old Kentucky Home” – what a moving moment! The Kentucky Derby is an experience of a lifetime.
