Free Time.
All vacations are flexible and include free time every day. They also provide great ideas (and prices) with their Explore More optional activities.

HAVE AN UPCOMING GRADUATE? GIVE THEM THE GIFT OF TRAVEL
“We often speak of wanting to give our children the world; giving the gift of travel is an ideal way to make that happen.” It happens every year. George and I were trying to think of something special to give our daughter for Christmas; we just couldn’t seem to come up with the right idea. She has a phone, an iPod, a laptop — all the necessary accoutrements for a 20-year-old.
We were looking for a gift that wouldn’t be forgotten, discarded or returned. Perhaps it was too much to expect, but we wanted to find something she’d always remember and be able to say, “My parents gave me….”
The solution was like the proverbial light bulb switching on over our heads. George and I were sitting at the computer together looking at photos from our last trip. Suddenly, we turned to each other and said, “Why don’t we give Jen a trip to Europe?”
From there, everything fell into place like a dream. A number of my friends had talked about their children’s travel adventures with Contiki — a tour company that caters exclusively to young people 18 to 35 — so we went online and researched the company and their outstanding reputation.
While Jennifer is smart and responsible, this will be her first travel experience without the family. We were comforted to learn that with Contiki she will travel in safety with a group of young people led by experienced guides. Plus, she won’t have to worry about arranging accommodations, transportation or meals. In addition to fun, the Contiki trip will provide her with greater cultural awareness, expose her to different perspectives and give her memories that will last a lifetime.
Well, I don’t think any of us will forget that Christmas morning. Jennifer screamed with delight when she opened the beribboned envelope and discovered the Contiki brochure and our note wishing her a great summer vacation in Europe.
Discussing itineraries together, Jen decided on the 14-day European Discovery. Our travel consultant registered her trip online via Contiki’s gift registry. That was an unexpected bonus because it means Jennifer’s grandparents can contribute funds and share the costs of her travel!
Once Jennifer told her friend Allyson about her Contiki trip, Allyson was able to convince her family to book her on the same tour. They’re so excited, I don’t think their feet have touched the ground yet! The gift of travel is a gift from the heart. Next to our time with family, George and I believe our trips together are among the times we treasure most. To be able to hear about Jennifer’s journey in her words, see it through her eyes, will be a richly meaningful experience we share as a family.
The gift of travel is both literal — purchasing travel on behalf of our children — and figurative — passing along the desire and lifelong appreciation for travel. We often speak of wanting to give our children the world; the gift of travel is an ideal way to make that happen.
