Backpack Versus Suitcase – How to Choose
If you won’t be traveling for a long time or you just pack light, you may be considering taking a backpack instead of a suitcase. Before you start packing there are some things to keep in mind. You need to consider the pros and cons of each one before you pick one instead of the other.
Suitcases
Most travelers opt for a suitcase no matter where they are traveling too. It can be a good choice for some as you can easily fit all of your stuff in them and they are easy to repack.
Pros
-Outer shell is hard enough so that your items won’t be damaged
-Can be locked
-Easy to transport because of their wheels
-Items can easily be packed in a way so that you won’t have to deal with wrinkles.
Cons
-Suitcase wheels can be difficult to navigate on some terrain
-Difficult to maneuver on steps
-Can be expensive
Backpacks
Some travelers opt out of using luggage and choose a backpack instead. This may be good for some, but for others the drawbacks aren’t worth it.
Pros
-Very mobile which is great for those that are trying to make a connecting flight or in a time crunch
-Can fit almost as much stuff as a suitcase if you are intentional about what you are packing
-Pockets allow for easier organization
-The ability to serve multiple purposes and can be used for things other than traveling
-Fairly cheap
Cons
-Difficult to keep an eye on since it’s on your back and not in front of you
-Can’t be locked in most cases
-May become uncomfortable if you have a lot of heavy items inside
-Difficult to pack clothes in a way so that they won’t be wrinkled
How To Decide Which One Is Right For You
As you can see, there are pros and cons to using each one. Because of this, it can be difficult to determine which one is right for you. Before choosing one over the other, think about what your travel needs are. Will you be required to carry a lot of stuff? Will you be going on uneven terrain or have to haul your luggage for long distances? Before converting to a backpack it’s a good idea to go on a small trip with one so that you can decide for yourself whether or not you mind ditching your luggage or if a backpack simply won’t work for your travel needs.
