While hostels tend to cater to those that are traveling solo, you don’t have to be lonely or keep to yourself while you are at one. In fact, it’s a great way to meet new people and give you someone to hangout with while you are on vacation! There are several easy ways to make friends while you are staying at a hostel.
Get Up Early
It’s pretty difficult to make friends when you are sleeping the day away. One of the best times to meet new people is in the morning when most people are still asleep. Many hostels offer free breakfasts so why not take advantage of that and make a new friend in the process? Try to share a table with someone else and strike up a conversation about their plans for the day.
Talk To The Staff
The staff at hostels are very friendly. They really get to know their guests and it’s not uncommon for them to try to get guests that they feel have some things in common to get to know each other. If you are shy, they can really help you break the ice and get to know others that are staying there.
Make A Meal In The Kitchen
Hostels often have kitchen access which means that you can cook lunch or dinner. You will also find that not only will you be able to make a great meal, but you might just be able to bond with someone that shares your love of cooking. Try to make extra portions of the meal and offer it to others. This will give you an easy opportunity to start a conversation with someone you don’t know.
Be Friendly With Your Roommates
Since you are sharing a room with others you might as well talk to them! Sure, it can be daunting having to sleep in the same room with a bunch of strangers, but use it as an opportunity to get to know them. The first step is to be friendly. Ask their name, where they are from and what they plan on doing while they are staying at the hostel. If you feel comfortable with them and as if you have a few things in common, invite them to do something with you like going to see an art exhibit or to a concert. You might just find that you end up making a lifelong friend.
Another great way to meet people within your age group and travel on a budget is to go with a tour company like Contiki tours or G Adventures YOLO tours. You will find 18 to 35 years olds traveling the world with these tour companies where your hotels, some meals & sightseeing are already included in the price.
