Travel Tips For Those That Are Retired

Now that your retired and our living out your golden years, it’s the perfect time to travel. You don’t have the responsibilities of a job to hold you back so it’s time to explore the world. These travel tips will help those that are retired enjoy their vacation to the fullest.

Be Flexible

To get great travel deals, consider having your travel agent watch for last minute travel deals.  We get lists daily for cruise lines that are selling inventory at rock bottom prices when departure dates are close. Since you are retired and have flexibility, why now take advantage of these lower rates.

Consider Group Travel

Whether you are taking an escorted trip or cruise, it’s nice to travel in a group with like minded individuals.  There are many advantages. For example on bus tours you dont have to worry about driving, moving your luggage around, what sightseeing you want to do, etc. as everything is pre-planned for you while still allowing some free time.  On a cruise you will often have added perks such as onboard credit and a cocktail party when you travel with a group.

Choose The Right Luggage

To make traveling easier, choose lightweight luggage or bags that have wheels, preferably 4. It’s wise to choose luggage that allows easy mobility and is comfortable enough to carry if need be. Also, choose luggage that is brightly colored or has a print on it. This will make it easy to spot amongst the abundance of black or navy bags that many travelers use.

Make An On The Go Bag

If you have to take medications, it’s a good idea to make sure that they are easily accessible. Create an on the go bag that you can easily slip in your carry on. The bag should also have handles or a strap so that you can carry it with you if you need to take it while out seeing the sights at your destination. Don’t forget to slip simple first aid items like bandages or alcohol wipes in there as well.

Know How To Access Travel Guides And Maps Beforehand

If you are traveling to a foreign country or somewhere you have never been, before leaving for your vacation, make sure that you are confident enough with your phone that you can access travel guides and maps. You never know when you might need them while you are on vacation. It’s best to know how to do this beforehand rather than waiting until you are in a pinch and need to access information quickly.

Get A Check Up

This is a good idea for all travelers and not just retirees. Visit your doctor a few weeks before you plan on traveling to make sure you are in good health and that it’s safe to travel. Now is the time to inquire about additional immunizations you might need and get prescription refills.

Communicate With Others Where You Are Going

It’s important to let family members and close friends know about your travels. Make a list of your travel dates, where you are staying and how they can get a hold of you. It’s a good idea that they have this information just in case there is an emergency. For an extra layer of protection, enroll in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program if you are traveling outside of the country. This free service will allow officials to help you more effectively should an emergency arise.

Choose Accommodations That Are Easily Accessible If Need Be

If you have issue getting around or need frequent breaks, make sure your hotel is easily accessible. The building should be easy to get too. There should also be an elevator that you can use rather than stairs.
