So you’ve tackled traveling with infants, toddlers and then children. What about teenagers? They can be moody, independent and not want to travel with their family. However, you can do some things to help them have a great time and give yourselves memories that you all will enjoy for years to come.
Plan The Trip With Them
No teen wants to feel as if they are being made to do something they don’t want to do or have no input as to what they are doing. A family vacation is no exception. Before you make your travel plans, ask them where they want to go. Get their opinion on things that they would like to do. Even if you don’t go to the destination of their choice, at least they will feel as if they had a vote on where you actually end up.
Choose Your Accommodations Wisely
Most teens want to have space and a little freedom. When choosing your hotel, it’s best to choose one where your teen can roam around and be safe. It’s worth the extra money to find a hotel where there will be activities suited towards them. Also, try to choose a room that’s large enough for your teen to have their own space. Even if it’s just a balcony, you and your teen will appreciate having your own private area to retreat too.
Go Over Budgets Ahead Of time
Let your teen know what your budget is for things like food or entertainment. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that they will actually try to stay in budget if they know they are only allowed to spend a certain amount. Have your teen help you find inexpensive restaurants or fun things to do that won’t blow your vacation budget all in one day.
Have Realistic Expectations
No matter how good your vacation is going there will be times to where your teen may not have the best attitude. It’s best to let certain things go and not argue about every single thing. It’s especially hard when teens are hungry or bored. Make sure you have plenty of snacks on hand or stuff to do to keep them occupied.
Don’t Cram In Too Much In And Bend The Rules
If you are needing a vacation, chances are your teen is needing one too. Try not to cram in too much to do and allow for some downtime. Don’t set the alarm one day and let your teen sleep as late as they want. Have ice cream for dinner or allow them to stay up late one night and binge watch a few TV shows. Bending the rules a little will allow them time to recharge and enjoy their vacation.
