With the weather getting chillier in the early mornings and at night, you know it’s almost time to start transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall. Soon enough, the sleeveless tops and shorts will be packed away, and the long pants, sweaters and hats of winter will be making more regular appearances. What if you’re traveling during this time, however? It can be difficult to know what to wear from one day to the next, when temperatures might be hot and sweltering one day, and quite crisp the next. Here are some tips on what to pack for fall travel in order to stay comfortable throughout your trip, even if the weather is less than stable.

Tights If you are a fan of wearing skirts or dresses, you don’t necessarily have to stop just because your destination might be cool at times. Simply pack thick tights to add warmth to your flirty skirts. You’ll want to make sure that you have tights to match each skirt, of course, but since they’re small and flexible, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem to squeeze them in. I recently saw both footed and footless tights at Target for just a few dollars per pair, so hit up a discount store before you go to find some nice solids and even a few fun prints to warm up your wardrobe.

Appropriate Shoes If your feet are cold, then the rest of you will be chilly, as well. Even if you’re wearing shorts or capris, throw on a pair of tennis shoes, like Keds, to round out your ensemble. Worn with low socks, you can be stylish as well as toasty warm.

Leather Jacket A light leather jacket can be thrown over just about anything and look nice. It can cover a tank top, a light blouse, and even a sundress if necessary! If you don’t like the look of leather, or you don’t want to spring for a leather jacket, a cardigan, denim jacket or shawl can function the same way, without the attitude.

Hats, Gloves and Scarves Fall accessories can keep you up-to-date as far as the seasons go. Tossing on a cute hat, trendy scarf or a pair of warm gloves will keep your head, neck and fingers comfortable. These are the areas of your body that tend to get uncomfortably chilly first, so even if you’re wearing only a light top, you might find that a hat will keep the rest of your body feeling great.

Underneath Layers While most of the time it’s easier to simply remove outer layers, you might prefer to throw on a tank top, camisole or undershirt in order to keep warm. If you don’t want to wear that layer on its own in the afternoon when it gets warm, you can just take it off in a restroom.
- Large Purse Carrying a large purse means that you have a place to stash the tights, hat or even a light sweater when the sun comes out and has you wishing you’d worn less. Instead of leaving it in the car, carry it with you so that once the sun begins to dip in the evenings, you’ll have your warm accessories with you.

Packing for a fall trip doesn’t require double the luggage in case of weather extremes in either direction. Thinking about layers and how you can add warmth without adding bulk to your suitcase will help you stay nice and comfy during your vacation. If you are interest in a Fall Foliage tour, make sure and book early, as they do sell out every year.
