Disgusting Food Museum Opens in Sweden

Not every food you love will be something that other’s crave. What’s irresistible to you may be absolutely repulsive to others. Psychologist, Dr. Samuel West, decided to create a museum that is loosely based around this idea in hopes that visitors would expand their palates just a bit. He recently opened the Disgusting Food Museum in Malmo, Sweden.

Here you will find a variety of different items that you may find repulsive or tasty.

The Idea Behind It
The purpose of this museum isn’t to repulse people. Dr. West read an article that had to do with the environmental impact of meat consumption. This made him start to think about other types of protein available and he eventually came up with the idea for the Disgusting Food Museum. Dr. West wants people to rethink what foods they think are gross and refuse to consume. He feels that many ideas behind what foods people don’t like are actually learned from cultural stereotypes. For example, root beer and Jello can be find alongside cooked guinea pigs and fried tarantula.  He’s hoping that visitors to the museum may reconsider what they find to be disgusting after they have a chance to see some of these food items firsthand.  The museum used four disgust factors to judge foods: taste, smell, texture, and how the dish is made

What There Is To Do
This museum is packed full of 400 square meters of things to do. Visitors won’t just get to see foods that they may deem as gross, but they will get to touch, smell and even taste them. The food here is pretty diverse so there’s bound to be something that visitors will like. The exhibit has 80 of the world’s most disgusting foods. Adventurous visitors will appreciate the opportunity to smell and taste some of these notorious foods. Do you dare smell the world’s stinkiest cheese? Or taste sweets made with metal cleansing chemicals?  Foods featured at this museum include:

-Fermented shark

-Foie gras

-Fried tarantula

-Cheese with maggots

-Bull penis

-Durian

-Rabbit heads

For Americans that visit the museum, they may be shocked to see that some of their favorite foods and drinks are located here. On display are both Jell-O salad and root beer. While many individuals in the United States love these two items, a lot foreigners do find them both to be repulsive.

If you are interested in visiting this museum, but don’t want to make the trek all the way to Sweden to do so, you may not be out of luck. They will be offering a traveling museum of sorts and will be visiting other cities in the future. This will allow as many people as possible to try foods that they think are disgusting. This isn’t the first interesting museum that Dr. West has created. He also opened the Museum of Failure. It actually ended up being a huge success.

The Museum will be open from October 29th, 2018 through January 27, 2019. After this time the thought it to open in other places around the world.
