When is Daylight Savings 2020 & when do we change the clocks again?

Daylight savings 2020 is Sunday, November 1st, officially at 2 am. It’s fall, so the time will move back 1 hour (“spring forward, fall backwards” was the saying that would help keep the time change straight for everyone.)

How did daylight savings come about?
Some say it goes back as far as 1784 with Benjamin Franklin in order to increase productivity and save on candles. Germany was the first country to pass it as a law in 1916. It was introduced in the U.S. during World War I in 1918, just for the summer months initially, and only a handful of states in order to conserve fuel & resources and to extend the work day. Then during World War II, it was reintroduced and was intended to be year round during “war time.” This lasted between 1942 and 1945. According to Winston Churchill, Daylight Saving Time expands “opportunities for the pursuit of health and happiness” for millions of people by optimizing the daylight hours. It was passed as a federal law in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

How does daylight savings affect your travel plans?
Well if you are lucky enough to be away, you get an extra hour! That being said, make sure you adjust your clocks so you don’t miss a flight.

Do all 50 states following daylight savings?
Currently 48 states have daylight savings. The two states that do not have DST are Hawaii and Arizona. That being said, several states including Maine, Florida, California, New Hampshire & Rhode Island are looking to pass their own laws to opt out of daylight savings. The territories of Guam, Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands do not observe daylight savings time.

More than 70 countries observe daylight savings time.

Interesting fact: The actual correct spelling is daylight saving time, without the “s,” although through time most people tend to add the s in the U.S.
