Cancun is a popular tourist destination, and it’s no surprise: The city’s seaside location was specifically chosen to attract visitors, and catering to tourists is a big industry in this Mexican city. Whether you’re into lounging on gorgeous beaches, immersing yourself in artifacts of an ancient culture, enjoying the hustle and bustle of a busy and popular vacation spot, or all three, Cancun has something for you. Even better, you can travel to this tropical locale without totally breaking the bank.
It’s important to consider carefully the time of year that you’ll visit. The area of Cancun known the “hotel zone” is crowded and busy during the peak tourist season, which falls between December and April. Airfare and hotel costs are also higher during these months, so one way to save money is to visit outside of that time frame. Beware, though: the summer months can be very hot, and hurricanes are a concern in late summer and fall.
Once you’ve decided when you want to go, it’s time to take a look at some of the attractions and activities you’ll want to check out once you’re there. First and foremost, you’ll definitely want to explore the beaches. Cancun’s beaches are famous, known for crystal-clear turquoise water and clean white sand. One beach, Playa Delfines, is located on one of the highest points in Cancun, and is known for being less crowded than the typical hotel beach. If your resort faces Isla Mujeres, you’ll find a beach with gentler waters, perfect for families with small children or nervous swimmers. You can also shop on the beach, as there are many Cancun natives who make a living selling anything from sea shells to sarongs up and down the shore.
For a fascinating and educational experience, travel to the Interactive Aquarium located in the middle of the hotel zone. Here you’ll be able to see and interact with exotic marine creatures such as sting rays, starfish and sharks. You can also choose to swim with dolphins at the Aquarium, which is a fun and unique way to spend an afternoon.
If you’re interested in Mayan culture, you’ll want to go to Xcaret. This is an eco-archaeological park that offers a wide range of interesting things to see and do. Discover a Mayan village, explore an archaeological site, and snorkel in underground rivers. Stroll through a butterfly pavilion, an orchid garden and a fauna breeding farm. Xcaret, like the Interactive Aquarium, also offers the experience of swimming with dolphins. Perhaps best of all, if you stay until evening, you can enjoy their “Xcaret México Espectacular” a night show that may feature anything from performances depicting ancient Mayan culture to more traditional Mexican dancing and musical numbers.
You’ll probably want to shop for souvenirs while you’re visiting Cancun. Consider leaving the hotel zone and shopping in the much more affordable downtown area. Market 28, a local downtown Cancun market, comes highly recommended for souvenirs and shopping. You’ll also find some excellent outdoor Mexican restaurants while you’re in the area.
Cancun is a destination teeming with all sorts of possibilities. There is always something to do here. Even if you’re on a budget, you can manage to have an excellent time in this fun-filled city.
