New Orleans has a special rhythm all its own; the sounds, scents, breeze from the Mississippi and the anticipation of your next meal. What a wonderful place to visit and soak up the unique atmosphere.
As a tourist, we alll have to do all the touristy things like coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, a po’ boy sandwich at just about any tiny dive, a fine meal at one of the many world renowned restaurants Who hasn’t wanted to dine at Brennans, Commodore’s Palace, or Antoines to name just a few? Listen to little jazz that can be heard anywhere on Bourbon Street. Walk around Jackson Square and listen to the young musicians, buy a great but inexpensive piece of art as a souvenir. Window shop for antiques on Royal Street. Take a riverboat ride and hear about Port New Orleans and its history while listening to a real calliope.
All of these fun things are within short blocks of each other right and the Mississippi. You can also take the famous St Charles streetcar to see the original “suburbs” of New Orleans. The landed gentry wanted to get away from the noise and close quarters in the 1800s so they built beautiful Mansions along and around St Charles Avenue not to mention some outrageous cemeteries.
Save room in your New Orleans feast for pleasing your palate with the tastes of Creole and Cajun cooking. Like the city itself, New Orleans cuisine is a delicious melding of French, Spanish, Cuban and African traditions, plus a host of others tossed into the cultural stew.
Truly an American original…New Orleans.
