Spring Down Under: Visiting New Zealand

1125

In scenic New Zealand the spring months are September through November, so any travelers wishing to exchange harsher autumn weather for the pleasures of spring would do well to plan a trip to New Zealand at this time of year. New Zealand consists of two main islands, North Island and South Island. Each of them has different sights and attractions that would be of interest to tourists. If you are planning to visit New Zealand soon, here are a few of the can’t miss activities that you’ll want to enjoy while you’re in the country.

  • Take a Milford Sound boat tour. The Milford Sound is a fjord in New Zealand’s South Island, located in Fiordland National Park. This fjord is known for its huge waterfalls, and for its mountain peaks jutting out of the water. Fiordland is an area of true remote, unspoiled wilderness and natural beauty, and a boat tour through this area is something not soon forgotten.
  • Bay of Islands. The Bay of Islands, located in New Zealand’s North Island, is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. It is known for its big-game fishing, and is also a popular lace for sailing. The Bay of Islands was named by the famous Captain Cook, and was one of the first areas in New Zealand to be settled by Europeans. The historic town of Russell, which dates back to the 19th century, was the home of New Zealand’s first permanent European settlement. Visitors to the Bay of Islands may enjoy riding in a catamaran on the historic route of The Cream Trip, the sailboat captained by Albert Fuller that was used to transport cream from the islands.
  • Queenstown. Queenstown is a resort town in New Zealand’s South Island, and it is full of exciting things to do. If you only have time to visit one town in the country, it should definitely be Queenstown. Here you can go bungee jumping, paragliding, or skydiving, if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush. Or you can pan for gold at Skipper’s Canyon. If you happen to be a Segway enthusiast, you might enjoy a Segway tour around the town. As you can see, there are a lot of activities in Queenstown geared for the visitor with plenty of energy. The Spring months are also full of local events, such as a film festival, a jazz festival, and week-long party celebrating 100th anniversary of the TSS Earnslaw – the only hand coal-fired, passenger-carrying steamship remaining in the southern hemisphere.

New Zealand is a great place to visit at any time of year.  A visit to New Zealand in the spring offers many opportunities to see the best of what the country has to offer.
