Vacationing in Montenegro

1173

The Balkan country of Montenegro is currently being rediscovered by tourists. The country has beaches and mountains to explore, and many travelers appreciate a visit to the historic churches and monasteries as well. The country has a number of attractions that you can visit and enjoy for free or for minimal cost, which makes Montenegro a great destination to choose if you’re traveling on a budget. It also offers a lovely Mediterranean climate, so it’s easy to enjoy yourself outside in Montenegro. When you’re planning your visit to Montenegro, be sure to include the following must-see destinations on your itinerary.

  • Go to the Beach. There are no less than 17 beaches on the Budva Riviera. While these beaches are a popular tourist spot, you’ll find that they are typically less crowded than other comparable European beaches, due to the fact that Montenegro is not as high on the tourist radar as many other areas. Take advantage of this fact to plan a romantic vacation or honeymoon in which the beaches of Montenegro feature prominently. Beaches of particular interest include Jaz, which was the site of a 2007 concert by The Rolling Stones, and is also a natural heritage site, and Mogren, which is known as the most attractive beach on the Budva Riviera.

  • Visit a Monastery. Montenegro has a number of historical churches and monasteries, but if you’re only going to visit one, visit the Ostrog Monastery. This rather amazing monastery dates back to the 17th century and was built into a cliff on Ostroška Greda. The architecture alone makes it a fascinating place to visit. You can also get a terrific view of the Bjelopavlići plain from the monastery. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the one-of-a-kind views. The Ostrog Monastery is the most visited monastery in any of the Balkan countries.

  • Visit Lovcen National Park. One of the most notable things about Lovcen National Park is its ropes course, and if you’re up for a little adventure on your vacation, you’ll want to give this a try. A combination of zip lines, rope bridges, ladders and platforms are provided for you to make your way from the starting line to the finish line of the course, high above the ground in the park’s tall trees. The course offers varying difficulty levels, so don’t be discouraged if you aren’t accomplished with ropes courses. The park advertises that guests from ages 5 to 70 can use the ropes courses, so there will likely be a difficulty level to suit anyone’s abilities.

Don’t forgot to tour the historic city of Kotor and if you’re up to it, take a hike in the Prokletije Mountains. The country of Montenegro offers you the chance for a unique and exciting vacation that you’ll never forget.
