In this day and age robots are just about everywhere. From hotels to cruise ships, you might be surprised to find robots doing the work that humans used too. Not long ago Royal Caribbean debuted robot bartenders and now Costa Cruises is getting in on the fun with robot greeters. Don’t be surprised if on your next cruise a robot is saying hi to you instead of a crew member.
Just Call Me Pepper
These robot greeters are named Pepper. Their sole purpose is to greet passengers as they walk by and answer any questions that they might have. They are programmed to respond to human emotions and more lifelike than you could imagine. They can provide tips on events happening on the ship, restaurants to eat at and excursions to take. They are also trilingual and speak English, Italian and German. What this tiny four feet tall robot lacks in size, it makes up for in wit. Pepper is also self-propelled so it goes from one location to another without the help of humans. This robot was first developed for use in Softbank stores. Costa Group has come to an agreement with this company to use the robots on their ships for a hefty fee. Pepper will debut on both the Costa Mediterranea and Costa Luminosa in 2016. It will be the first time that both ships have sailed from Miami since 2009.
Costa Mediterranea
This ship is inspired by Italy. Guests can enjoy a variety of pasta dishes on board, a highly entertaining atmosphere and carefully selected decor throughout the ship. From the inlaid wood, Carrera marble and the interesting artwork, the overall design is something that the passengers won’t forget.
Costa Luminosa
This ship has both Italian and European influences. One of the things Costa Luminosa is known for is the diverse itinerary that it offers. It’s one of the smallest ships in the fleet so it can go to places that other vessels can’t go too. The vibe onboard is friendly and passengers tend to get to know each other thanks to the many fun, onboard activities like karaoke.
As you can see, in addition to Pepper, passengers will be able to enjoy a lot of different things onboard each ship. It will be interesting to see what other types of robots cruise lines debut on their ships to make passenger’s travel adventures a little more futuristic.
