With traveling more convenient than ever, there are more airports than ever before. Often times, airports are refurbished in order to accommodate passengers and more air traffic. However, in some instances, airports have been abandoned as they are no longer needed or have received damage beyond repair. These airports are abandoned and will probably no longer ever be operable.
Nicosia International Airport
This airport once was once fairly busy, but has been pretty much empty since 1974 when it was invaded. Bombings left this airport inoperable and no efforts have been taken to restore it. Because of this, flights have been landing at the Larnaca International Airport instead. There are currently no plans to restore this airport to its former glory as the Larnaca International Airport has been doing an adequate job.
Denver Stapleton International Airport
Operational until 1995, this airport was once one of the top 10 busiest airports in the world. Despite this, there was also some issues surrounding it. Among them were noise complaints and the runways weren’t far enough apart which caused issues with planes landing and taking off. Denver International Airport replaced Stapleton and most of it has been torn down. The only thing that is left is the 12 story control tower and there are no solid plans as to what to do with this land.
Gaza International Airport
Also known as the Yasser Arafat International Airport, the Gaza International Airport opened in 1998 and was only considered usable for about 4 years. There was a lot of hope for this airport with both Bill Clinton and Yasser Arafat in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Unfortunately, the Israeli Air Force bombed the airport’s control tower which ceased operations. No efforts have been made to get this airport up and running again.
Ellinikon International Airport
Located in Athens, this airport is located only around 4 miles from the city center. It was built back in 1938 and was a base for Olympic Airways, which has gone out of business. Ellinikon International Airport closed back in 2001 and was replaced by Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos. In the past, some parts of the airport were used as refugee camps, but there are actually big plans for this airport. It will be demolished and the land will be used for a casino, golf course and some housing complexes. In the not so far off future the Ellinikon International Airport will be nothing, but a memory.
