Guests on an Avalon Waterways Active & Discovery Cruise feel like kids who have been turned loose in Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory with so many choices to choose from. Active & Discovery cruise offer as many as 28 shore excursions, and they are all included. With each sailing, there are four new Active & Discovery itineraries for the 2022 and 2023 season.; two on the lower Danube, one on the Moselle and one on the Seine.

Avalon christened its newest ship, Avalon View in Slovakia this month during a cruise on the Danube. As an example of the Active & Discovery choices, all passengers can choose to visit the Belvedere Palace and Museum. This is the permanent home of the largest permanent collection of Gustav Klimit paintings, including his 1908 masterpiece “The Kiss”. Guided tours will be available on all itineraries that call in Vienna.

Classic excursions offer guided tours, visits to historical sites and leisurely paced walking tours. More active excursions may include cooking classes and painting workshops to immerse guests in local culture. The really active excursions include ebike rides through the streets of Vienna and the mountainside of Viseguard in Hungary. The bike tour in Vienna ends in Prater Park, where you can hop aboard the 125-year-old Wiener Riesenrad giant ferris wheel for a ride. The bike ride in Hungary scaled a mountain. At the top of Dobogoko, a pilgrimage site known as the “ heart chakra of the Earth” ,reward yourself with delicious chimney cakes and a meditation session.
