November cultural events

The crisp autumn air and vibrant fall foliage make November the perfect time for cultural adventures across the globe. As the temperatures cool in many destinations, you can avoid the high-season crowds and take in stunning scenery and festivities. From age-old traditions to modern marvels, these November destinations offer immersive cultural experiences you will never forget.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Further east in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the rivers also take center stage for the delightful Loy Krathong festival. During the magical festival, the city glows with beauty. At night, people float flower garlands called krathongs on rivers and canals while making offerings to the goddess Pra Mae Khongkha. As the full moon rises, people float flower-strewn “krathong” rafts carrying lit candles and incense down waterways. The krathongs represent letting go of grudges and ill fortune. The lyrical prayers to the goddess Pra Mae Khongkha and the gentle lapping of the Ping River create a serene ambiance. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple on Doi Suthep mountain and stop at street food stalls to sample authentic northern Thai cuisine like khao soi curry noodles.

As you stroll along the ghats in Varanasi, glowing candles and floating lamps light up the sacred Ganges River during the mystical Dev Deepawali festival, 15 days after the full moon. In Chiang Mai, lyrical prayers and flower-laden krathongs fill the air in honor of the river goddess. The lively streets of Riga come alive for Latvia’s Independence Day with concerts and torch-lit parades that celebrate national pride. During the festival, many oil lamps are placed on the steps of the ghats and floated on the Ganges to honor the river and its Gods.

In the mystical city of Varanasi, India, glowing candles and floating clay lamps known as diyas illuminate the sacred Ganges River during the breathtaking Dev Deepawali festival. At over 80 ghats along the riverbanks, the flickering lights reflect off the dark water, creating a magical glow. The sweet scent of incense fills the air as you listen to devotional songs by pilgrims, giving thanks. Take a boat ride on the Ganges in the evening to witness the most enchanting views of the illuminated waterfront. Visit nearby Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon.
