When you think of the word ‘paddle’, what comes to mind? Being up the creek without a paddle or sitting in a canoe. If you picked the canoe, then you are on the right track! Going on a canoeing trip is so much more than just sitting in a tiny boat getting a good arm work out. The following canoeing trips are definitely memorable.
The Barrier Reef In Belize
This is a great place to canoe even for novices. The reef itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s worth docking your canoe on one of the nearby islands like the Silk Cays or Laughingbird Cay and doing a little bit of snorkeling to see the reef. The water is pretty much always nice and the canoeing conditions are very favorable.
Mekong River In Southeast Asia
This is probably the most scenic canoeing trip on the list. Dependent on where you set off on the Mekong River, you may be able to see ancient temples and villages. A popular site is Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, which happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For this trip it’s best to have a guide with you to help keep you out of harm’s way and to advise you on where to stop at.
Okavango Delta In Botswana
This canoeing trip is for the more avid canoer. The delta is the world’s largest inland delta and it empties into open land rather than the sea. Along this trip you may be able to see a variety of animals like cheetahs and rhinos. If you are looking for a real adventure, go on a dugout canoe ride through the wetlands with one of the locals at the helm. Nearby there are also quite a few lodges and safaris to stay at.
Vava’u Islands In Tongo
This area is a canoer’s dream with it’s clear waters and beautiful beaches nearby. There are also marine caves that can only be accessed by boat. Whales and dolphins can often be seen in the distance frolicking about in the water. Just don’t get too close as you may get splashed! The area is also an excellent place to snorkel. If you are looking for something unique to do, hang around for the hula dancing and umu feasts that take place on the beach once the sun sets. These traditions are a huge part of the Polynesian culture.
