Perth, Australia, is the largest and capital city of Western Australia. With a Mediterranean climate, Perth winters (December to March) are hot and dry, and the winters (June through August) are cool and wet. Perth is a popular vacation destination during most of the year. It has been called the most isolated city on earth, because although it has a large population of nearly two million residents, the closest city with over 100,000 residents is Adelaide, which is about 1,300 miles away. If you decide to go to Perth, then, you’ll need to be content with staying only in this city, for the most part. Don’t let that stop you, though, because there is no shortage of entertainment and great accommodation and dining options in this city! Here is where to stay, what to eat, and things to see while you’re in Perth, Australia.

  • Where to Stay  If you are looking for high-end luxury, you’d be wise to consider the Richardson Hotel & Spa. This five-star hotel features large rooms, private balconies, very comfortable beds and exquisite service. Such luxury will cost you, though; prices hover at around $400 per night. For a centrally located, family-friendly hotel, you might like Kings Perth Hotel. The rooms are clean but simple in their furnishings, and the customer service is good. Prices here will run under $200 per night. For longer stays, or if you’re bringing a large family, the apartments at Mantra on Hay are worth looking into. These are one- and two-bedroom apartments that will cost about the same as a moderate hotel room. It’s about a ten-minute walk into the center of Perth, and the building itself is also on the bus line.

  • What to Eat  No matter which cuisine you desire, you’re sure to find something delicious to eat in a city as vibrant as Perth. If you are looking for a casual, family-friendly place that serves up pizza, typical bar food and offerings of modern Australian cuisine, try Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle. If you’re up for a special night out and want to dine in ambiance and luxury, consider Opus Restaurant, which serves up French and various international cuisine. Taka’s Kitchen offers Japanese takeout (or takeaway, in Australian!), Miss Maud Swedish Smorgasbord Restaurant features an international buffet, and Zamia Cafe offers up a delicious breakfast and brunch.

  • Things to Do  One of the nice things about Perth is that there is a wide array of free or inexpensive attractions to keep you occupied. For example, you could go snorkeling in Shoalwater Marine Park, if you have snorkeling equipment (or you can rent it for a fee). Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a place you won’t want to miss for beautiful views and people-watching. Bring along a picnic lunch and enjoy the relaxation! The Perth Cultural Centre is an art gallery, museum and state library. Admission is by donation. If you want to spend the day swimming, sunbathing or building a sand castle, check out the urban Cottesloe Beach.
