If you have been planning a trip to Australia, you would do well to consider making Sydney, Australia, located on the southeast coast of the island, one of your main destinations. As the most populated metropolitan area on the continent, you’ll find plenty to do, beautiful architecture, a bustling city and plenty of wide open spaces. Sydneysiders, as the locals are called, are welcoming to tourists, and will likely regale you with tales that will impress you. They’ll also want to show you around their beautiful city. Here are some of the sights in Sydney that you won’t want to miss:
-
Sydney Opera House You’ll know you’ve arrived at the Opera House when you see the unique architecture: The structure has been built to look like a boat’s sails on a windy day. It’s a very popular tourist destination, and has been drawing visitors since it opened in 1973. Thousands of shows and concerts are performed here each year, and you can also go when there is no show playing just for a tour. There are even sometimes weddings taking place in the Sydney Opera House or on the grounds.
-
Harbour Bridge The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most famous icons of the city, and for good reason: The bridge, nicknamed “The Coathanger,” carries all traffic from the business district of Sydney onto the North Shore. It is located near the Sydney Opera House, and since it’s the only way into and out of the center of the city by foot, car or rail, you literally cannot miss it.
-
Bondi Beach (pictured) Why do people go to Sydney? One of the main reasons is because they want to visit the beach! Bondi Beach is 30 minutes by car from the center of Sydney, and is the perfect place to catch some waves or bask in the hot Australian sun. You can shop and eat on the strip adjacent to the beach, and you can even stay in one of the hotels or other accommodations very nearby to the sand. In the summer (which, remember, is December through February down under!), expect Bondi Beach to be very busy with tourists and locals alike.

Sydney Markets When you visit a foreign country, it’s important to mingle with the locals in order to get a good snapshot of the culture. You can do this while enjoying some delicacies and other items by visiting some of Sydney’s markets. You’ll need to find out in advance when the markets are going on; some of them are held weekly, some monthly, and some even less often. Ask around and you’ll be sure to find a market that’s going on while you’re in town.
Sydney also has a wide variety of museums, art galleries, a botanical garden, and Little Italy and Chinatown sections, as you would expect in any large metropolitan area.
