Day Trips From Prague
One of the most popular destinations to visit in the Czech Republic is Prague. It’s not surprising, as it’s filled with gorgeous scenery and centuries-old buildings. Unfortunately, not a lot of tourists explore outside of the area, which is a shame because they really are missing out. For those that want to see as much of this area as they can in a limited amount of time, there are a variety of day trips from Prague for travelers to enjoy.
Visit Kutna Hora
This medieval town is known for a variety of different things. The silver mines catapulted it to be one of the richest and most powerful towns in the Czech Republic. Visitors also often explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. Barbara’s Cathedral where they will find a unique, Gothic design. Another interesting stop is the ‘bone church,’ Sedlec Ossuary. It consists of a little chapel that displays the skeletons of anywhere from 40,000 to 70,000 individuals. They are all arranged in a way that complements the decor of the chapel, making it both beautiful and eerie all at the same time.
Take A Half-Day Trip To Konopiste Castle
This castle was built in 1280. In the 1700s, it was turned into a chateau with a Baroque style. It became the home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria back in 1887. He lived there until he was assassinated in 1914. His assassination is known to have sparked World War I. Today, the castle houses art, tapestries, and extensive weaponry. It’s easy to get lost exploring for hours. Visitors can learn about the Archduke and his family and see his many hunting trophies that are displayed throughout. Outside there’s a garden that’s filled with a variety of statues and glasshouses, as well.
Visit Karlstejn Castle
While it is a 4 ½ hour trip from Prague to visit this castle, it is worth the travel time. Karlstejn Castle sits atop green forests that lend to the aesthetic quality of the “castle on the hill.” Once at the gate, visitors will get to walk or ride a horse-drawn carriage through it. They can learn how the purpose of the castle being built was to protect the jewels of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. There are many chambers and halls to explore that contain things like a St. Wenceslas’ replica crown, paintings, and frescos. Visitors can also see the Chapel of St. Catherine where Charles went for reflection and meditation. No tour of the castle is complete without seeing the view from the towers.
Go To Cesky Krumlov A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Anytime you visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you know it will be impressive. Cesky Krumlov doesn’t disappoint with its impressive construction. It was built back in 1240 and overlooks the nearby town. Visitors can marvel at the furnishings or the courtyards. If you have time, you should also visit the town center to do some exploring as well.
