When you think of Holland, also called the Netherlands, what comes to mind? Windmills, Wooden shoes, Tulips? If it’s the last one, you’re in good company. Spring is the time when Holland’s famous tulip fields are in full bloom. Many tourists flock to Holland every March through May to see the springtime blooms that have made the region world famous. Are you planning on visiting Europe this spring? If so, here are some ways that you can see the cheerful tulips of Holland.
Tulip Festivals in the Spring
Spring is the season to visit Holland, for the weather is mild and the temperatures range from 10-20°C (50-68°F), which makes it perfect for enjoying the outdoors. The country is also less populated, and you will save time at some of the famous tourist spots as there are less crowds. Holland experiences a temperate maritime climate, and spring is a season of transition with moderate weather. While April and May are warmer, March is generally cooler. Nonetheless, it is essential to pack layers as the climate can change rapidly.
The Keukenhof Gardens
Keukenhof Gardens, situated in Lisse, is one of the prime places to relish the tulip fields. It is the largest flower garden globally, showcasing over seven million tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. If you want the full tourist experience of seeing the tulips of the Netherlands, then you should make time in your itinerary to visit Keukenhof. As you drive in, you’ll notice fields upon fields of gorgeous tulips. Once in the gardens, you’ll see that it’s perfectly set up to enjoy not only the tulips, but also a variety of other spring blooms. The gardens themselves encompass over 70 acres, and there are sidewalks and walkways to make getting around the park easy. Entrance fees are 15 euros for adults and 7.5 euros for children, and if you choose to drive in, you’ll pay an additional 6 euros for parking. This year, Keukenhof Gardens are open from March 21 to May 20, from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm.
Bicycling in Holland
Bicycling is a common mode of transportation in Holland, and taking the time to admire the tulips from your own bike is a good way to meet the locals and really get a taste of what living in the small country is like. You can actually rent a bicycle in the Keukenhof Gardens parking lot. Pedal around the town of Lisse, taking in the fragrance and sight of the surrounding landscape. Stop for food in town, and enjoy a picnic lunch as well as, if you’re lucky, conversation with other tulip-peepers or locals to the area.
Visit Noordoostpolder
Noordoospolder is a part of Flevoland, which is Holland’s youngest province and has the biggest flower bulbs in the area. While it’s not as much of a tourist destination as Keukenhof or Amsterdam, Noordoostpolder does attract thousands of visitors every spring. You can cycle or walk through the beautiful landscape and take part in the annual Tulip Festival. The dates of the festival are from mid-April to early May. During this time, there are many other attractions as well, including gardening shows, photography contests, special bicycling routes and more. Other popular attractions are De Orchideeen Hoeve and Museum Schokland.
