Patriots Day is a yearly reminder to honor those that were killed or injured in the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. It is not a federal holiday, but many organizations do hold vigils and or other events on this day.
What People Do
On Patriots Day the President has stated that the American flag should be displayed on homes as well as government buildings. Flags that are flown on a pole are generally lowered at half-mast. Many individuals hold a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. eastern standard time since this is when the first plane was flown into the World Trade Center. Schools and educational organizations will often have discussions about what happened on September 11th.
Events Being Held on September 11, 2014:
Flags Across Arlington and a Moment of Silence
To remember the victims of 9/11 there will be a moment of silence held at 9:37 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. This event is open to the public. The county of Arlington will also hang U.S. flags not only on buildings, but from overpasses as well.
Pentagon Memorial Services
Throughout the year the Pentagon Memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day and admission is free. On September 11th they will be holding special services to honor the 184 victims that lost their life on American Airlines Flight 77.
Ground Zero Walking Tours
Ground Zero walking tours happen throughout the year in New York City, but are especially humbling on Patriots Day. Attendees will get to have a tour with a personal tour guide that takes them on a two and a half hour walking tour. They will first visit St. Paul’s Chapel, which served as a refuge for many firefighters, paramedics and police officers shortly after 9/11 occurred. They will then make their way to the financial district and then over to the 9/11 memorial where they can gain a better understanding of all the horrific events that occurred.
Tickets for Ground Zero walking tours cost $25.00.
The events that occurred on September 11, 2001 still remain fresh in the minds for many of us. There were around 3,000 lives lost on this day. Although we cannot change the past we can pay tribute to those individuals and their families. Not only can you visit a 9/11 event or observe a moment of silence, you can also show support to firefighters or police officers on Patriots Day.
National Day of Service and Remembrance – around the country many Americans will get involved in their local communities in honor of 9/11.
