Romantic Getaways in Late Summer

In many parts of the country, the weather is starting to cool slightly, making it a great time to think about warm days in the sun and chilly nights spent in front of the fire with the one you love. With kids going back to school and families settling into a routine again, late summer is a popular time for couples to think about romantic getaways. If you are considering a romantic weekend away in August or September, here are some places to put on your list of possibilities:

  • Southern Maine  The northernmost state in the continental United States, is a great bet for romance any time of year, but the end of the summer is particularly appealing. The air will be warm and sunny during the day, and the nights will be comfortably cool enough for snuggling. Stay in Ogunquit’s Meadowmere Resort, where you can enjoy a Labor Day Stay and Play Getaway. In September, the trees will start changing to their rich autumnal hues, making a great backdrop for a picnic for two. Be sure to make time for blueberry pancakes at the Maine Diner in Wells after sleeping in one morning

  • Asheville, North Carolina  Asheville seems to be made for sweethearts! With so many bed and breakfasts offering romantic weekends away, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you both. The 1889 WhiteGate Inn and Cottage offers special packages for lovers with details including long-stemmed roses, champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries and more. You’ll be completely taken care of, from dinner to a visit to a winery, flowers, and chocolates at A Bed of Roses Bed and Breakfast. Asheville has day spas that cater to couples, gorgeous flowers, art galleries and so much more.

  • Northern Rocky Mountains  If you live in the west and love scenic drives, consider a driving weekend through the Wyoming Rocky Mountains along the Continental Divide. Here you can walk in the wagon ruts left during the westward expansion on the Oregon Trail and see where Sacajewea is supposedly buried. Another great Northern Rocky destination is the Montana Scenic Loop, considered by many to be the best scenic route in the West. From flat plains that go on and on to the striking views of the snow-capped Rockies, this is one drive that will be full of romance, wonder and awe. Camp under the stars, or stay in a resort such as the Tamaracks Resort, where you will enjoy the privacy of your own cabin.

  • Cruises:  If you can get away after Labor Day, you will find that cruise prices drop considerably now that kids are back in school.
