Can you believe it, another Super Bowl is upon us? It feels like it was just New Year’s, and here we are in February already. Super Bowl Sunday is a time for Americans to come together and enjoy some of their favorite comfort foods. Every year, Americans consume an incredible amount of food on Super Bowl Sunday, with an average viewer consuming 2,400 calories during the game alone. Millions of people order take out for the big game and the three most popular dishes are pizza, chicken wings, and chips with dip.

Besides Thanksgiving, this is the biggest day for consuming calories. It’s not uncommon for viewers to eat close to 2,500 calories alone during the game.

Here is an estimate of Super Bowl Food Consumption each year.

  • Pizza: Super Bowl is the 2nd biggest day of the year for Pizza delivery. More than 12.5 million pizzas are ordered. Pizza hut expects to sell over 2 million pizzas, and Domino’s over 12 million slices.  Keep in mind these are just 2 of the companies that sell pizza.
  • An estimated 14 billion hamburgers will be consumed and grilled.
  • Like guacamole with your chips? Then you’re not alone because 139.4 million pounds of avocados are used to make guacamole during Super Bowl Sunday.
  • Don’t forget the chips as 11.2 million pounds of chips are consumed. This equates to 293,000 miles of potato chips if they were laid out end to end.
  • If you don’t like regular chips, you can contribute to the 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips that are eaten.
  • Over 3.8 million pounds of popcorn is eaten on Super Bowl Sunday. That’s a lot of popping!
  • 2.5 million pounds of nuts
  • Over 1.4 billion chicken wings are consumed by avid watchers of the game. Over 57% of those who eat chicken wings opt for ranch dressing over blue cheese.
  • If you don’t want to cook, you can be part of the 48 million people that order take-out.
  • Americans drink over 325.5 million gallons of beer throughout the day (over 2 million cases.)  This is equal to 493 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It’s estimated at over 1.3 billion dollars.
  • $2.37 million dollars is spent on soft drinks that are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday.

So how long does it take to get all this food and prepare for the actual day?

Participants tend to start their Super Bowl preparations at least 40 days in advance. In total, 10 million hours are spent collectively to plan parties and festivities surrounding the big game. To make sure you have a memorable Super Bowl experience, why not try making a juicy whiskey burger or explore alternative snacks such as vegetable trays or quesadillas? Whatever you end up eating for this special occasion, you can be sure that it’ll be a tasty one!

It’s important to note that the U.S. isn’t the only country that watches the Super Bowl as it receives 160 million viewers worldwide. This equates to close to 40 million people that will watch the Super Bowl in other countries. As it’s difficult to watch this intense game without chowing down on something, they probably have their own favorite snacks to munch on as well. What will you be eating on Super Bowl Sunday? Just remember to do yourself a favor and skip stepping on the scale for a day or two following the game.

Try not to overeat & drink so much that you are part of the 7 million people that don’t show up to work on the following Monday morning. It is by far the biggest day of the year when employees call in sick.
