March Festivals Around the World

The month of March marks the beginning of spring. Since temperatures are pleasant in many areas now is a great time to go outdoors. There are a lot of great festivals taking place in March throughout the world.

Bali Spirit Festival
The Bali Spirit Festival is truly a holistic experience. It features health and wellness presentations by speakers from over 50 countries. One of the main themes of this festival is yoga and there are many different yoga classes that attendees can try. There’s also a lot for the kids to do as well including dance lessons and circus demonstrations. In general, March is a good time to travel to Bali because it’s usually not too crowded and the weather is pleasant. Bali Spirit Festival takes place March 19 – 23, 2014.

Grape Harvest Festival
Grape lovers unite in Argentina during the Grape Harvest Festival. Each year in the city of Mendoza attendees basically come together for a huge wine party. This location is chosen for this event because it is responsible for 70 percent of the wine production in the entire country. The festivities kick off on March 7 with the Queens White Way parade. Several more parades take place throughout this 5 day event and there’s plenty of music, dancing and wine to go around. One of the highlights are the fireworks. During the Grape Harvest Festival many local eateries offer special menus that help diners pair up their meal with the right wine. Around 70,000 people attend this event each year.

Las Fellas
The Las Fellas festival in Valencia, Spain is not for the faint at heart. This event is full of gunpowder and spectacular pyrotechnic displays. During this festival attendees tend to get very little sleep because of the sheer noise of the events that take place. To add to all the activity there are bands that play very loud music throughout all hours of the day and night. Las Fellas marks the end of winter. This festival comes to a dramatic conclusion with the burning of huge sculptures while the crowd looks on and dances wildly. This one day festival takes place on March 19.

Also known as the Festival of Colors, Holi takes place in North India 3 days after the March full moon. This festival is to welcome Spring. On the last day, people throw colorful powder over each other. If you plan on visiting India during this time, make sure and wear old clothes or stay off the streets.

Calle Ocho
This music festival began in 1978, and is the largest street party in Miami held on SW Eight Street, running a total of 23 blocks. It is a celebration of the Latin culture with food, music and local vendors. Over 2 million people are expected to attend this year on March 9th, 2014. Performers this year include Sean Paul, Daddy Yankee, Elvis Crespo, Frankie Negron and Leslie Grace.

Festivals are a great way to celebrate the month of March. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up there’s bound to be a few festivals around your neighborhood. Even if they aren’t as wild as some of the ones mentioned above, they will probably still be very entertaining.
